The Warwick Vase
Today we went to yhe Birrell Collection in Glasgow. I had been there years ago and it was great to see it again. There are so many things to see and read about that you need to go for more than one day.
This is the Warwick Vase. In 1771 fragments from this vase were discovered in the grounds of Roman Emporor Hadrian's villa at Tivi Italy. It originally sat in the villa's gardens, a social space for feasts and wine drinking. By 1775 it wasrestored to designs by the Italian artist Giovanni Peranesin.
When the vase was unearthed, statues of Hadrian's lover Antinous were found. Anxious died young and so Hadrian commissioned many status to reminder him by.
