Harrods, as was
The only other branch of Harrods to open outside London was set up in Buenos Aires in 1914, when Buenos Aires was a city and a half and Argentina was a world player. Those days are long gone, and after a couple of changes of ownership and progressive downsizing the 'overseas' Harrods finally closed down in 1989. I used to go there in the 70s and 80s to get my hair cut.
The owners have fought off law suits and attempted take-overs and have managed to hold on to the magnificent property, which covers an entire city block and has floor space of 47,000 m². They have also held on to the right to use the name and (very slightly altered) logo, and it has recently been announced that there are plans to reopen the great department store.
I for one don't see it - one reason being that the city has changed a great deal and the area where the store is situated is seedy and run down, with trendy population centres and malls in new satellite areas. I also tend to doubt whether the Argentine economy can support a store like Harrods any more. We shall see.
