The “Poor Man’s Barometer” or “Weatherglass” or “Shepherd’s Clock” is one of the flowers which was believed to indicate the weather. The Scarlet Pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis) is a tiny low growing orangey-red flower which can be found flowering in summer in arable areas and near the coast but is less common in Scotland. It got its nickname as it needs full sun to open and then closes in dull weather and generally the flowers open around 8am closing at about 2pm so I have been watching it for days waiting for a chance to see the open flowers.
