For a group photo – it's a comb for his beard.

This village local, attending a BBQ for my son's girlfriend's birthday, was invited to join the group photo but had to groom his beard first; that's politeness and breeding for you, he said.

It was not good weather for an outdoor party: the rain started soon after we did, and the wind made it very chilly.  But our son's friends were game and generous and everyone made the best of it.
