Fire Destroys a Local Church
Early last Sunday morning a fire destroyed Dulwich Hill Holy Trinity church hall and community centre. Father Dave, who is not your average Anglican clergyman, was interviewed on ABC radio yesterday morning and below is an excerpt from their website ;
'Fire has destroyed an 1886 building which housed a boxing club and drop-in centre for local troubled youth.
A 100-plus-year-old church in Sydney's inner-west has been destroyed after it burnt down early on Sunday morning.
Fire fighters were called to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Dulwich Hill just before 4.00am (AEST).
An iconic building in the area, it's known mostly for the work of Father Dave Smith - or 'Fighting Father Dave' - and his work with troubled youth. In fact, the 1886 building was where Father Dave recently set a boxing marathon record to raise money and awareness for local youth issues.
"This was our youth centre and our community centre, so this is where we had the boxing club, the youth drop-in, and all those sorts of things happen."
Father Dave told Adam Spencer this morning that he'd woken just before 4am to the sound of his dog barking, and found the building already well ablaze.
"It was extraordinary. I've never been that close to a fire before of that sort of magnitude," he said.
Authorities are now investigating whether the fire was deliberately lit, with Father Dave handing a list of possible suspects to police of youths.
"We think it's probably just one of the disgruntled lads in the area."'
