Getting up steam
More friends staying with us who, sadly, can no longer climb mountains.
Another lake cruise. This time for the full length of Lake Windermere. Sunny calm weather.
The cruise leaves and returns to Lakeside at the southern end of the lake.
And it is here that it has a direct link with the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway. This is another of Englands many privately run steam railways run by enthusiastic volunteers. It is a short stretch of line but is much loved by families who ride it to the link with the lake cruises.
Here the tank engine “ Princess “ gets up steam ready to haul a train full of people who have just disembarked from the cruise boat.
In extras a shot of someone breaking the law.
Windermere may be England’s largest lake. But it is only 10 miles long and most of it much less than 1 mile wide.
Some years ago The National Park Authority won a monumental battle and succeeded in imposing a 10 miles per hour speed limit on the whole of the lake.
This brought an end to the use of speed boats and water skiing which had become dangerous to sailing boats, canoeists and sailboarders and disturbed the peace of the surrounding fells. This has been a great improvement in the view of lovers of the Lake District. But has can be seen here some people occasionally try to break the rules.
