The large knife in the middle of all the smaller knives represent the fear that was forced onto the children (the less pointy knives). The reddish background is symbolic of the bloodshed and involved in the war and involved in this process of fear. The fact that the smaller less pointy knives are huddled together represents further the childrens sense of fear there sticking together and being dependent on one and other in order to survive
