Lithgow Zig Zag

Grazo and I agree it’s impossible to spend too much time exploring railway history. The western railway over the Blue Mountains, constructed during the 1860s, was one of the engineering masterpieces of the world, particularly the Zig Zag at the Lithgow end to open up the western plains. The ZZ operated as the main line until 1910 when replaced by a series of tunnels.
It’s difficult and not strictly legal to access so the new 4WD ute got a good work out as did our legs. It’s hoped to reopen the track as a tourist railway after its destruction in a bushfire a few years ago - some rails have been laid already but it’s going to be an extended labour of love (and time and money).
The main blip shows the magnificent viaducts on the top and middle roads as well as the lower road on the way to Lithgow.  The extra shows Grazo taking in the history.
