Spring tarring

The roads in Russia, especially the minor ones, are such that winter breaks them up terribly, and it is a ritual of spring for an army of Tadjiks ("gastarbiters" as they are known in Russian, from German obvioulsy) to come and sweep up all the rubbish everyone has discarded in the snow over winter, then to repair the roads. That was what was happening fourteen floors below my window this morning.
