272 Of 365: Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)

Down at the River Avon today. I had intended to head up to the weir for a while.

But SWMBO spotted some swans downstream, so I joined her - when we spotted the heron. Tripod up, camera sorted out with a 2x teleconverter on my favourite 70mm - 300mm lens.

The heron didn't stay in one place for too long but it did move to two other locations. Managed to get over 125 shots - some good, someone so good.

Herons are often seen stood as still as a statue on their long thin legs in shallow waters of ponds and lakes patiently waiting for their next meal to swim by. These tall birds spend most of their time alone feeding mainly on fish but can be tempted by the occasional tasty mole! When feeling particularly lazy the heron will visit gardens with ponds for a quick and easy snack.
