His Royal Highness....

Not much royalty here in the colonies, but Spike comes pretty close in this household....

My little corner of the world has been rudely and distractingly disrupted by a fire burning in the southern part of the county. I usually ignore the Cal Fire notifications if they're not evacuation notices, but this one is hard to ignore because of the smoke and the CalFire planes flying overhead. We are on a flight path from the Sonoma County airport where they are headquartered to the south.

It is a testament to my level of concentration when quilting that I looked up from my workstation in front of the window and realized that what at first looked like fog (or something wrong with my eyes) was smoke. Another clue was that we had all the windows open because it's very warm and now the house smells like smoke. I don't think it is close enough to be a threat and I had almost forgotten (or repressed) what it is like, but the smoke and the planes are a definite trigger, and the PTSD has kicked in on some subconscious level.

Tim and the kids left soon after dinner last night, but Will stayed on and we chatted for awhile about the state of the world. It is 'very Will' that he thinks his generation is pretty savvy and capable of surviving and perhaps even changing things. I told him that I hoped he was right because we had mad quite a mess of things for them to sort out. He was kind of looking at his phone, (as is his generation's wont) and he suddenly said something about Chloe visiting and walked out the front door. We assumed he was going home, but he came back in with Chloe and her little dog, She is a lovely and capable young woman and I was quite touched that she came. Grandparents can be a pretty boring lot, particularly someone else's.

Things are looking clearer now, and it is encouraging how quickly these fires are being detected and how much effort is going into stopping them before they become disasters.

My corner of the world is safe for the moment, and we have all mastered the art of living in the moment....
