Hobbs's Run

Business Hours

Sorry it has taken so long to get myself organised. My next few postings will be backblips from our recent trip north to Lismore, on the NSW far north coast. A few months ago the entire area was subject to a semi biblical deluge which inundated large areas including the central business district of Lismore, the north coast's largest regional city. Billions of dollars of damage was done, hundreds of businesses will never open again and thousands of people have lost their homes.

Anyway, the nearby village of Nimbin was largely not affected, it being situated on high ground. In the 1960's and 70's, Nimbin was a centre of  hippy culture, complete with flowing tie dyed robes, long hair, tangled beards, free love and hashish. These days there are a few old arthritic survivors of the period who run businesses trading on the areas' colourful background.

You know I love interesting signs. This one speaks of the village's laid back philosophy to business. Mind you, I think the approach to commerce is really a whole lot more hard nosed than the inhabitants like to let on. Either way the place is fascinating, a major tourist success, and very much preserved.
