Lessons in catching oysters
Another windy day, with a fair few torrential showers - so again, not the best for wildlife photography. Fortunately the Oyster catcher was giving lessons to its fledgling on the mud bank.
The youngster was struggling a bit with the process of catching worms and I watched the parent show the youngster where to look for the worm and then, having got the worm how to take it to the water and wash it, before it could be eaten. The youngster seemed to catch on pretty quickly and largely caught its own worms and washed the mud off them itself after that.
There didn't seem to be any other youngsters, so I'm guessing that this parent only had the one fledgling (a typical clutch is 2 or 3 eggs). The youngsters legs are pale greyish, you can just about see its right leg in the shot. The left leg is covered in thick gooey mud. By the time that it matures the legs will be the pale pink of the adult bird and its eyes will have their orange eye ring.
