A Day In The Life

Milkweed

There are five different milkweeds native to Maine, and this is one of them, Swamp Milkweed. We now grow three native varieties in our Certified Butterfly Bed (I like saying that) and hope to include the other two by next year. I’ve read a non-native variety called Tropical Milkweed is actually harmful to Monarchs, causing damage to their wings • We’ve had a busy day of errands shopping for people food, cat and bird food, plus other supplies • While watering the garden we discovered a new pest: the squash vine borer moth. What a horrid name! The insect caught our attention because it was colorful and new to us. It seemed mostly interested in the pumpkin plants, “resting” near their base stems. Now we know that Ms. borer moth was actually laying eggs, which is very bad! She needs to go bye-bye, soon! • So long, June!
