Book of devotion from 16th century
Back to Oxburgh today for a briefing on some of the objects discovered in the roof space during the renovation, prior to a display to be mounted in mid -July. This book of ‘The Kynges Psalmes’ - in English - intended for individual or private devotion is believed to date from1569 as it refers to the ‘common plague’ which was rife in that year.
The front cover and some pages have been damaged/ eaten by rodents but most of it is perfect and the back cover still has the embossed leather and gilded design (so we were told, we were not allowed to pick it up and look). The book will be leaving Oxburgh very soon as it is going to the conservators, but it should back in a state to display sometime in September.
