The Cellarer's Checker. Grade 2 listed building.
This small stone building, mid 13th century, is one of the few remaining buildings of Barnwell Priory, an important Medieval Abbey. When the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538, no use was found for most of the Priory, but this small building survived, called the Cellarer's Checker. This humble building seems to have been overlooked when the Priory was destroyed. It was a type of trading point,'Goods In' for the monastery, and was the office where the cellarer would check his stores and accounts. It stands on the corner of Priory Road, Cambridge and although I haven't seen inside, it is occasionally opened for viewing.
