The Eagle
This eagle is outside the Eagle Bridge health centre in Crewe, and there's a plaque under it, which is currently damaged: looks like someone tried to pinch it for the metal, for pity's sake.
Anyway, the plaque reads:
The "Eagle" - A Short Story
A violent storm in 1879 saw the Llandulas viaduct on the Chester to Holyhead line partially washed away.
A new bridge was speedily made in Crewe Works; whilst the remnants of the old one as well as its 4 cast iron Eagles were sent to Crewe, for scrap.
When Francis W. Webb saw the Eagles he instructed that they were mounted on a bridge that joined the carriage and steel works over the main Chester line in Crewe.
They were moved from the bridge in the late 1980s when the bridge was demolished.
The Eagle that is situated here is approximately 1/4 mile north from its original site on Eagle Bridge.
The other 3 Eagles are also on display in Crewe.
