Visiting the library

We walked to the town library today, and found this Masked Lapwing on guard on the roof. Lapwings are notorious for building nests in public places, like grassy parkland, and then defending the incubating eggs very aggressively. But they also nest on flat roofs (see webpage), and I suspect that's what has happened here. On the ground outside the library was a Lapwing chick (extra). It had probably left the nest, jumped off the roof and couldn't work out what to do next. The parent was keeping a close eye on it. 

This species is also called Spur-winged Plover. The spur on the elbow of the wing is visible in the main photo.
