Although it has no roof or floors the ruined Redcastle tower still looks quite impressive especially with its red sandstone in the sunshine. The oldest part is believed to have been built in the 16th century from the remains of the nearby Longniddry Castle which had recently been destroyed during the turbulent “Rough Wooing” period when the owner sided with the English. Redcastle fell into decay when it was forfeited after the 1746 Jacobite rebellion and the new owner preferred to live in Edinburgh. Today there is a good little garden nursery and tea room within its former grounds,
