Martyrs

The obelisk on the left is in Calton Hill burial ground. It is there to commemorate the five martyrs (three English; two Scottish) who were imprisoned for campaigning for Parliamentary reform in the late 18th century. They were advocating universal sufferage and annual parliaments. They were charged with sedition and transported.

A morning glued to the radio as resignation after resignation emerged was followed by a lovely lunch with friends. Then more listening to political commentary. It was interesting to hear the former MP Rory Stewart argue that there is now a need for parliamentary and voting reform given what we have been experiencing in recent years. And even a written constitution. Whatever next? More martyrs needed?
