Mt Isa

Still in Mt Isa today. Our first outing was to the 80 year old underground hospital which was a hoot. It was built by volunteers from the Mt Isa Mines in record time when the mine donated enough explosives. Mt Isa is at crossroads in the Australian Outback and they thought it might be a prime place for an attack in WW2. The hospital was near a hill so they decided to build some tunnels in case they needed to shelter.

Much of the original equipment is still there and I was fascinated to see a lot of old things we used in the 70s when I did my nursing training. I liked the hints on using the enema equipment.

They also had some tent houses which was like the one our host Gary was born in and lived in for the first few years of his life. They were short of building materials so they had canvas rooves which had corrugated iron on top to keep the place cooler in summer. They had the usual stuff you see in museums, much of which was the brands we had when we were kids.

Next stop was trip out to the local water reservoir called Lake Moondara where we had a picnic in the shade. Very pleasant…where we chatted about absurd things trying to set the world right…as you do.
