Bilas

I would like to say it doesn't happen very often...but...

I shower and change in the gym which means that I have to carry my clothes for work. And invariably, given the state of mind, I forget one thing or another. For socks, I have two options: an extra pair in my gym bag or the one in my desk drawer. The first option was apparently used another day and was never replaced and so I had to go for option two. Never mind that the pair is grey.

'Bilas' comes from the Swahili word 'bila' which loosely translates as 'without' but has entered into the world of Shang - a street language which changes daily and incorporates all of the languages from the 54 ethnic groups in Kenya as well as English. If you mention that you are 'bilas' here in Nairobi, most people will blush and laugh because you have just said that you are not wearing underwear. In my context, I mean that I have not worn socks...

So have a chuckle today and, perhaps, try 'going bilas'
