Fairy Tale Day 7 Pilgrimage
Move out of Munich to Starnbergersee Lake to the south, the richest area of Germany & a place we stayed at for a night back in 1976. While the Chiemsee we visited on Saturday has the largest water area, the Starnbergersee has the biggest quantity of water in Bavaria. It is up to around 300 metres deep, whereas the Chiemsee is on average 25 metres.
Didn't stay long but moved on to the nearby Ammersee and the 'Holy Mount' of Andechs, yet again a monastery but best known for it's brewery, dairy, restaurant and beer garden. Since the 8th century, it has been a popular place of pilgrimage.
As it turned out the main attraction of lunch & the afternoon was a pilgrimage. The order of Swabian hairdressers were having their annual pilgrimage, complete with their own band. We ended up staying for four hours! About 30 years ago there was an impending political decision on the future of the Hairdressers Guild (allowing untrained hairdressing) and around 350 of them had, as a last resort, undertaken a pilgrimage to stop the law change. It worked! Since then an annual event but now perhaps around 100 people. Was such fun and some interesting conversations, amongst others on Brexit!
Angie fell in love with the drummer Hans, & managed to get him to agree to a photo as he staggered at about 1 km/h to the waiting bus. He was soooo drunk, but like any good Bavarian, totally in control & told us abut his time working as a waiter in London's Inn on the Park in 1970. His colleagues sitting patiently in the bus had to finally end the conversation and pour him on board.
Then drive through Landsberg am Lech to the hotel. This was the only hotel I knew of before booking the week, not for the hotel part but the excellent restaurant. Turned out the restaurant was closed Monday & Tuesday, just like another excellent one just 2 kms away. The lovely receptionist very willingly agreed to a photo, in fact she was blushingly honoured.
No choice but to go a bit further afield to a Mexican restaurant I knew. So no pork crackling tonight, but rather too much green salady type healthy stuff and another Limoncello Spritzer. Not a good take in Bavaria for the Final Supper.
