DDW's April Challenge Day 25 : Rough
I have a friend visiting for a few days, so I'm being a bit of a tour guide. We started off with Kirkwall cathedral and I took some pics in there.
I've always liked this memorial to the explorer John Rae, the man who discovered the North-West passage. A lot of people believe it was Franklin who found it, but it was Rae. The fate of the Franklin expedition was discovered by Rae too - poor planning, poor preparation and general incompetence meant the expedition descended into disaster and cannibalism. Victorian society refused to believe Rae....
The memorial is beautifully carved and the stone has a wonderfully rough texture, rather than the smooth surface of most such memorials.
