A Good Day for Stream Sitting at Cherry Run
We'd been swimming the day before, so we didn't think we needed to do that again so quickly. But a good stream sit sounded like just our cup of tea. This is a thing we did back in "the early years" before we had much air conditioning: take a couple of chairs and go sit in a nice, chilly stream. Wykoff Run in Quehanna was always one of our favorites.
My husband suggested we stop at Jim's in Bellefonte and grab a salad and then head for Cherry Run. And that sounded grand to me, until I remembered that Jim's is closed during Arts Festival week. So we ended up with Burger King takeout, instead: fish sandwiches and fries, eaten with gusto at Governor's Park.
Then we were on our way to Cherry Run, where things are a bit cooler, back in the shady green woods. We walked up the creek and found a really nice spot, where he put his chair in the water and I sat on a big green rock. We had our water shoes on, but even so, the rocks were slick and slippery, and we had to be careful, lest we take a tumble. Tiny Tiger reports (via a digital thermometer with a 10-foot probe) that the water temp was 62 degrees F, and the air temp never cracked 80. The bugs weren't bad at all.
Here is a shot of Cherry Run, from one of the several wooden bridges. You can see that the stream is lined with trees, rhododendrons, and green moss. It's running a bit low this summer because we are low on rain, but let's hope we get some nice, refreshing rain soon. Doesn't it look cool and green and shady?
In the meantime, here's a favorite song about a stream: Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, with Islands in the Stream. And here's a bonus: a cover of the same tune, by Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes.
