Sledmere
Another day, another stately home ... another collage!
Today's pile is Sledmere - seat of the Sykes family in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Although the exterior looks very stark -- even a bit grim -- the interior was beautiful, with so much to see and learn about. The small pictures in the collage show from top to bottom, left to right: The entry hall, the elegant staircase with beautiful oval skylight above, the bedroom Queen Elizabeth II slept in when she came to Sledmere in the 1950's to purchase horses, the stunning library, and the Turkish bath built by Sir Mark Sykes but sadly he never got to enjoy it as he died from influenza in 1916 before it was finished.
Extra shows Mr. W making friends with Ethan, a denizen of Sledmere's stable block.
The heat is ramping up -- this evening (we are now in Lincolnshire) at 5:30 p.m. it is 91F and it promises to be even hotter tomorrow and Tuesday. This in a country unfamiliar with a great deal of air conditioning! We are staying in a very old, creaky hotel with windows that barely open, no a/c, and no fans. Ugh.
