A Scorched Earth Hipster
A hipster has been described as a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as outside the cultural mainstream.
The word hipster is often used as pejorative for someone who is pretentious or overly concerned with appearing trendy.
Therefore, when my brother bought these new jeans with turn-ups (which in this image he has paired with his "happy shoes") for his summer works party I teased him by saying he had "gone all hipster on me" and that he would soon also be sporting a checked shirt, a full beard and a beanie hat. The scorched earth in the background is what's left of our lawn in the heatwave.
Actually I'm being unfair here as my real life experience of so called hipsters, which to be fair isn't huge, has always been good - polite, friendly and easy-going.
I remember reading an article a few years ago in which they were described as "the harbingers of doom" not because of who or what they are but what comes after them. They tend to be artists, musicians, barristas, coffee shop and bar owners or run other creative small businesses, who move into an area which is considered run down or a dingy neighbourhood, where rents and property prices are lower, and turn into a vibrant and welcoming place to be. Unfortunately, once the area becomes popular gentrification tends to follow, rents and property prices rise exponentially which in turn leads to the people and businesses which created the vibrancy in the first place having to leave and the area becoming a rich persons' ghetto and a cultural void.
