Blossoms
The potato plants are beginning to blossom, which is a good sign! It means the plant is ready - large enough - to produce tubers. These purple-tinted flowers are unique to the Katahdin potato, a new variety we’re growing this year. According to The Maine Potato Lady (yes, she’s real) it’s an heirloom white potato first grown in 1932, stores well, and is drought resistant • We’re also growing Eva, Fingerling and Red potatoes, which have similar flowers but are white • It’s hot and humid but I won’t complain because it’s a few degrees better than what some in the UK are experiencing today. It’s just miserable. I hope they feel some relief soon. The good news is we have a chance for some rain this afternoon through tomorrow. Fingers crossed! • What do you call a baby potato? A tater tot :)
