Funeral Urn for Jim.
This morning i began making a funeral urn for our dear friend Jim O'Brien who died about a month ago. I have spent quite a bit of time researching size etc. for urns....not an easy thing to figure out. What with how many cubic inches a person is reduced to once cremated.....finally decided on weight (7 lbs), height (approx. 9") and capacity (approximately 250 cubic inches).....and so i began exploring shapes. It was actually so liberating to be dealing with something meaty, mostly i've been having to make cups and mugs (approx. 1 lb of clay) so moving around 7 lbs of clay was very satisfying! Part way through the first one, i paused and reflected on what i was actually making... a large pot to hold the ashes of a very dear friend! I actually got very weepy - something i wasn't expecting to happen. But of course it makes perfect sense, this was not an ordinary production item...this was a very special vessel! I truly loved making these pieces, and so tomorrow i will make lids and trim them, do some decoration!
In other news: it has rained all day here, which feels somewhat fitting for such an event!!
all is well at Big Hill.
