Smardale Gill viaduct

We crossed this famous curved viaduct today. It is now a footpath through a well known nature reserve. One of the few sites where the scarce Scotch Argus butterfly can be found. We did not see any today but we did have a good sighting of a red squirrel.
The viaduct was built in 1861 as part of the railway line which took Durham coal to the Furness iron ore mines. The line ran through Arnside.
The extra amused my rather warped sense of humour.
