Red soldier beetle

It's hanging onto the stem of a lavender plant.  I really went out to see if there were any butterflies on the buddleia, but no luck.  There were no insects there at all, though lots of flowers are open and giving out plenty of scent. In the whole garden, I found one small bee, and a tiny black insect.
