Welcome to Auckland Domain
An overcast Saturday morning meant a different target for my camera this morning. When the Council was upgrading Lower Domain Drive (new footpaths and adding a cycle lane), there was a need to strengthen the retaining structures in a number of places. Over many years, these had given way to a greater or lesser extent, causing the footpath to fall away, creating a hazard. I am not aware of anyone falling from the path; but the uneven path posed an unacceptable risk in today's world.
In December I posted a photograph of a different one of the fences designed as a barrier from the quite steep falls from the path down into the bush; taken before it was completed. I also put into my blipfolio a picture of the left hand fence in this picture.
This is taken just after the start of Lower Domain Drive, from Stanley Street. To me, these two fences serve as a sort of entrance gateway without gates. The tops of the poles (covered over in December) are carved in traditional Maori style, while the palings in the palisade have been stained a colour similar to what would have been used in the palisade around a Pa (fortified village).
Worth looking at large.
Early blip today, as S and I are heading north again, as tomorrow we go further north to visit friends for lunch.
