The back gate
The back entrance to Chapel of Garioch Kirkyard. Known as Pittodrie's Yate or Gate this entrance probably dates from around 1626 which is around the time that the original church was built. Only the South aisle of this remains as an ivy covered burial enclosure.
Prior to the building of the 17th century church a private Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built here around 1357 at the behest of Christine, sister of Robert the Bruce.
The Yate was probably the Laird's private entrance to the kirkyard.
The extra shows a general view of the kirkyard with Bennachie in the distance.
