Looking back
This morning when driving to Grey Lynn for a Lewis Road milk refill, and other food items, I heard a Kim Hill interview od an English historian who is in New Zealand to give of his knowledge of British Prime Ministers.
As an historian, he must (almost by definition) look back. Like the best, however (an I will include daughter C as one of the best historians I know), he uses the past to assess the present and warn of the future. He was fascinating to listen to. Especially when Ms Hill asked him whether he thought that Boris Johnson might respond as had Donal Trump in January 2021. His instant response was that that was never a possibility; for all his faults He assesses Johnson as not knowing how to move from great ideas to action that helped the people, whereas "Trump is evil", he said with great feeling.
It has been suggested that I should write a memoir. I did write a sort of memoir using some of my many photos to illustrate points, for a presentation at a medical school class reunion in 2019. I was well received, and my hesitation is based on my engagement in the present, and a continued wish to influence the future. Ms Hill's guest this morning showed that these things are not mutually exclusive.
On my run along the top of the waterpipe from the storage lake to the treatment station, I stopped and took this photo looking back to where I had come. Looking the other way would have appeared much the same. Perhaps a message to my self.
