In the corner
We have never had any luck here with mesembryanthemums. The sparrows love them and usually eat all the leaves as soon as they appear! This year we bought plants, rather than growing them from seed, and didn't plant them out until they were a bit older.
The idea was they would be less tender and juicy and attractive to the birds! It seems to have worked! Also, by this time of the year, there are plenty more tasty fresh leaves about than a month of so ago.
We have a huge population of sparrows and they are devils for taking the buds off the sweet peas and the new growth off the top of the pea plants. I have given up trying to keep them off the lettuce and Swiss chard, there is enough for all of us, but I would like them to leave me the sweet peas!
