Double-heading DSNGRR K-28s
These went past us on our walk today. Something new! I knew that the railroad had a couple of K-28s, but only ever saw one running - often with a big snow plow. Both of these locos have been adapted to use oil firing rather than coal. The smoke is less think, but doesn't smell like I thought it would. And the sounds are the same - yea. The conversion for each runs somewhere around $1M. Quite the investment but should all but eliminate the train starting a fire in the dry season.
I always liked the K-28s - usually used in the day on passenger trains, but also freight. This train was 15 cars long! Yikes - the hill outside of town that they start climbing is long and steep so their work is cut our for them..
