Cybele and Demeter

So far, I've created seven collages of Greek and Roman goddesses.  This is Cybele, the Greek goddess of nature and wild animals.  The extra is Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture and the harvest.  I begin these collages with creating a painted paper background.  The figures are black and white vintage illustrations that I color with pastels.  The headpieces are collaged images that suit the nature of the goddess.  When that is done, I photograph the piece and then subtly alter it digitally to what you see here.  The final step will be to have them printed and then to add small painted touches making them mixed media pieces rather than just collage.  Yesterday was the Celtic festival of Lughnasa that celebrates the harvest.  It is the first day of autumn although it won't feel like it around here with our heat and humidity.  Still, the wheel of the year is turning you can feel its gentle shifting.
