Gaol

There was a tradition in some societies whereby the sins and shame of everyone would be ceremonially handed over to a plant which could then be banished, destroyed or punished in other ways – sometimes being put into a prison cell.
But another, rarer, occurrence involved a plant willingly taking on this burden.   
A messiah plant.
