The church in the field
Today we drove out to Romney Marsh for a look at some of the tiny churches that still exist here.
This is the Church of Thomas Becket, situated in the middle of a large field. You collect the key from a nearby house and let yourself in. It’s got box pews, which are fascinating. I’ve only seen one other place with box pews (in York) yet today I’ve seen two.
There is normally a meandering stream burbling through the field but today it’s mostly bone dry. There is one stretch of water but it’s hard to see how the sheep get to it to drink.
Extras: interior of Thomas Becket church, Derek Jarman’s headstone in St Clement’s church nearby, with some spooky death images on another tombstone, apparently indicating the burial of smugglers, and a quirky road name. We couldn’t go inside this last one as a wedding party were waiting for the bride.
