Quite a day on the NYMR . . . determined to attract the visitors the railway re-started their full steam timetable this week . . . and it has not gone well. Today, two trains were cancelled altogether.
Southern Region Steam Loco 825, in the main picture, managed to set 3 fires between Grosmont and Whitby. It was over 2 hours late getting back to Grosmont.
However, this gave us the opportunity to have a long chat with the drivers of diesel locomotive 31128 Charybdis . . . in English pronounced kuh·rib·Duhs . . . a sea monster in Greek mythology. Built in 1959, extras show the cab and the view through the centre drive window, with the essential coffee cup to hand. Both drivers were from Teesside, with one learning how to drive a diesel having spent a 17 year apprenticeship to drive a steam loco. Quite some dedication by volunteers. Having started at 06.30 today, the crew should be finished by 20.30 tonight and ready for a 60 mile drive home.
