Backblip 9th July 2022 Day 8 of our NC500 trip.

Day late for this backblip, busy yesterday this one is Dunnet Head, the day started wet but suddenly went sunny with cloud so decided to go, a mixed batch, including a few attempts to get a Puffin trying to land on the cliff, and some site information. The Orkney map shows the nearest we got to Scapa Flow. The lighthouse buildings were well maintained but the others are from the wartime and are very rundown the one shown shows the inside and the blast cavities in walls, all interesting will need to do some research as to what was there, there appears to be an underground facility as there are numerous air vents all over the area.
The boat/coach trips were reasonable to Orkney and Scapa Flow but we couldn’t take “TJ”, and to take “Algee” over was a little expensive just for a couple of days £200 plus.
We didn’t realise how dangerous it is to sail across the Pentland Firth due to how the weather conditions can change quickly, advice to ships Captains is to make sure all hatches are closed before the start.
