Wanderings & Witterings

Hogsback

Wednesday was our monthly 'Daytrippers' outing (aka Have Bus-pass Will Travel) and this month we headed off to see the Govan Stones.

Daytrippers was set up several years ago to encourage some of the people in the church who might not otherwise go out much to explore to visit places as a small group using our concessionary travel passes. We also try to visit places that are free to visit and by-and-large succeed although it's not a 'rule' we adhere to religiously.
Although I go along, and to be fair generally enjoy these days out, I must admit that at times it's like spending the day in the company of elderly aunties. Nothing happens quickly and decisions on even the simplest of matters takes time. Detaching myself from 'Ramblers' mode doesn't always come easily to me! Patience is not one of my strong points.

Anyway, off we went by bus into Glasgow on Wednesday morning and our first stop when we arrived was for coffee. Some of the biddies decided they wanted lunch. Of course, it was only 11.30am and the place we went to didn't start serving lunches until 12 noon. You get the idea!

Coffee / lunch over, we took another bus over to Govan to visit the wonderful Govan Stones - medieval carved stones from the Viking period. These are situated in the former Govan Old church and are indeed a free attraction. Among the carved stones on display are five magnificent 'hogback' stones and these are my Blip for today.

We had intended also visiting the nearby Fairfield Museum but ran out of time, so that will be added to our list for a future outing. On leaving the Govan Stones exhibition there was time for another coffee stop before getting the bus back into the city centre and another home from there.

Govan has such a rich heritage and there is so much to see. A return visit, probably made solo (!), will probably be made soon, I think.
