LANDING STRIP

The World’s First Manned Flight was made in a glider in 1853 by local man George Cayley, 11 miles from here. The Wright Brothers are accredited with the First Powered Flight, with their 12 second long flight. This beach was used in 1910 by Mr J W F Tranmer to run Filey Flying School. A hanger was built on the cliffs on the right of this picture, and the beach provided a safe runway if the tide was like this. . . . not just any old summer beach then . . . going to get my sheepskin leather jacket, still scarf and goggles out in preparation . . . beware Red Baron !
