Alicante, by Ray K. Metzker

This photo, and a whole roomful of others by the same photographer, form part of the new show that I just saw at San Francisco’s Pier 24. I had never heard of Metzger before, but he is truly one of the greats: every picture is a gem. You pretty much have to see the prints in person to appreciate him, because the use of darkness is so intense and the use of light so sparing.
