An Teallach
Backblip, too tired last night.
Today was about running and running - and walking.
Left Poolewe on a bus at 9.15 in the mist and started running 10.30. It was supposed to be cloudy and 16-19C, but, as you can see the mist cleared and we had unbroken sunshine for hours (and only the later ones back, like me, got the haar returning near the end).
We were running the 35/37k across the Great Wilderness in Wester Ross
and about halfway through we were at the furthest point from any road in the UK.
The first half was really tough, a long steady climb frorm near sea level then down to about the same elevation. Then a river crossing, nearly a mile of bog, another crossing and a short, levelish section by this river looking back to AnTeallach. We'd through the gap at the righthand end of the ridge.
Next was an unrelenting climb up a zig-zag path to about 9miles and it was hot and airless - and walked. What a relief to get to the friendly folk at the checkpoint at the top for a rest and refeshment but the legs had to get going again and it was a long, and pleasant descent to the next lot of friendly folk and some life back in the legs and on to familiar territory from last year.
The next mile or two were run, walk, repeat - the walking to cool down a bit, but then a more consistent breeze and I was able to run most of the last 8 miles (mostly flat or down) and into the mist with about 4/5 to go.
There was a sting in the tail, there had had to be a re-route of the final part which was up & down and rough in places, but about a k shorter.
Met by Mr Rat who'd finished, showered and returned, in a few minutes under 8 hours. Might have been a bit quicker if it had been cooler but I wouldn't have had the fantastic views.
Out for a meal in the evening with a friend who did a shorter option, though still a challenging one.
P.S. 2 extras added; 3 lochans with the middle of nowhere somewhere in the vicinity and Shenaval bothy just before the first river crossing and bog
