Day of the Mellons - Wednesday
Backblip
What a day! As it was sunny (but very windy) we decided to have a drive out to Mellon Udrigle (one of my most favourite places). The drive to there takes you through Gairloch, Poolewe (past the famous Inverewe Gardens where we went in 2006 on honeymoon and bumped into Lawrence Llewlyn-Bowen dong some filming). He's very petite (but not so petite in other ways now)! We arrived at Melon Udrigle and parked up. It was lovely to be back here to this magical spot on earth. It is no exaggeration to be open jawed at its beauty. White sand like icing sugar, turquoise sea, majestic mountains in the distance and grassy slopes with rocks for exploring. I wish I lived closer but, well, that's why its special I suppose, you appreciate the effort to get here.
After a quick walk on the beach wo set off on our two hour walk round the headland and uphill to the summit of Rubha Beag, which looks over to the Summer Isles. Boy it was windy at the top. We walked over to the other peak and sat in a sheltered spot for our picnic. It was a circular walk and we arrived back at the car park and headed down to the beach for a proper explore and sit down. Ben, of course cannot sit for long, and to be fair I can't either so I get his restlessness. He had a paddle, scrambled over rocks and leapt off to his hearts content.
We needed another refreshment and where else to go to but Mellon Charles to the Perfume Studio and Cafe. Another revisit for us. It's Scotland's only working Perfumery! Since we were last there in 2016 he has extended his range of natural soaps what he started out with waaaay back perhaps even pre 2006 cos we were also there then. I bought body oil which he def didn't have back then. The whole area is beautiful, you drive through Aultbea on the little roads and arrive at this headland with stunning views over to the Isle of Ewe and the Torridon Mountains. The area was of massive importance to national security in the 2nd World War and there is a wealth of information on display at the Artic Convoy Museum in Aultbea. We had coffee and each had a different one of their home baking. Mmmm so good. The Cafe itself has won numerous awards for their ethos to sourcing local or if not then other parts of Scotland. It's a MUST VISIT !https://www.perfumestudioscotland.com
It was time to head on home. Driving here is a joy. Slower, due to the smaller road, but this means you can take in the views which change dramatically from one mile to the next.
It was back to Ross House for the tea of corned beef hash followed by apple pie and custard (quick and easy), games, a film and general chilling with the best people after a great day out!
