a lifetime burning

Fresh this morning

Tiny Tuesday: Common Darter freshly emerged

After the remorseless sunshine its been delightful to wake up to the soft sound of rain, and that rain while only light, has been falling for most of the day so far.  The cooler air has also suited the dragonflies as three seem to have emerged from the pond this morning.

I was too late to see the emergence itself, but I did manage to capture this Common Darter as it waits for its wings to harden fully before setting off for a life in the air.  As you can see from the darkness of the wings, it is nearly ready to go now.  As ever you can't see all the eye detail etc unless you are prepared to look in large.

I am always amazed that something so (relatively) big, is able to fit into its nymph stage carapace.  You can see the relative sizes of the two from the discarded exuvia in the shot.
