Wilhelmina tower

The Wilhelminatoren is a lookout tower in the South Limburg town of Valkenburg in the Netherlands. The thirty-meter high national monument from 1906 stands on the Heunsberg and offers a panoramic view over the South Limburg hills. The tower is accessible via a footpath or a cable car from the center of Valkenburg.

The tower was built on the initiative of the Kurcommissie Falcobergia, a competing association established in 1895 for the Valkenburg Association for Foreigners Traffic Het Geuldal, which had been established ten years earlier. Both associations aimed to promote emerging tourism in Valkenburg, but private interests also played a role. In 1898, Het Geuldal had already had a wooden lookout tower built in the Rock Park on the Cauberg. It was demolished again in 1910. The Wilhelminatoren arose in 1906 on the opposite Heunsberg, then on the territory of the municipality of Oud-Valkenburg.
