A Duck House, South Lake, Ightham Mote
Another train strike today which I had to take as holiday but it was much better that the alternative, which would have meant a tortuous journey into work with no gaurantee of being able to get home. We decided, therefore, to go on a trip to another National Trust property, this time it was Ightham Mote. The house in today's image dates from 1320!
Until today I didn't realise there was a difference between a mote and a moat, although they do derive from the same 14th Century french word.
A mote means a mound, hillock, embankment or a castle on hill. Ightham Mote does actually have a proper moat surrounding the building, so in reality it's two mote/moats in one!
