Redman Hirahara House
What will happen to this house? Year after year it becomes more and more dilapidated. The once magnificent mansion sits in an agricultural field between Hwy 1 and Monterey Bay, slowly succumbing to the elements. This classic Queen Anne Victorian was designed by William H. Weeks and constructed in 1897 for James Redman. The Missouri born farmer (1856-1921) prospered raising potatoes and sugar beets in the Pajaro Valley. The Redman Family sold the dwelling to the Hirahara Family in the 1930's. The Japanese-American family worked as farmers, until they were interned during World War II when they were relocated to Arkansas. After the war, the Hirahara family reoccupied their farm and made additions on the property in order to house many Japanese-Americans, unable to return to their prewar housing because of injustices continued after the war. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, but fundraising efforts for restoration seem to have stalled.
